The Masigalgal (Torres Strait Islanders) Corporation, administers the native title rights and interests recognised in 2000 over Masig (Yorke) Island on behalf of the Masig and Damuth people. The Masig People and Damuth People determination decided two different native title claims at the same time. They were decided together as they involved the same applicants, respondents and area of land. The negotiated agreement and court determination recognised the Masig and Damuth people’s native title rights to posses, occupy, use and enjoy the land subject to their traditional laws and customs.
Aside from the determination, the Masigalgal (Torres Strait Islanders) Corporation also administers two Indigenous Land Use Agreements between the Masig and Damuth people and Telstra and Ergon Energy respectively.
Masig Island is a coral cay, and has been impacted on by climate change. The RNTBC has also had limited success in ensuring that local businesses continue to benefit the community and hopes to operate the local freezer that is frequented by trawlers and fishers in the area.
