Goldfields and Great Sandy Desert sites add 7 million hectares to Indigenous Protected Areas

Two sites in Western Australia amassing to an area larger than Tasmania have been placed in the care of traditional owners. The Ngadju people in WA's Goldfields and the Ngururrpa people in the Great Sandy Desert will receive more support and autonomy in traditional land management practices.

Caesium mine extracting very rare ore, and an Australian first, opens in WA's Norseman

Australia's first commercial caesium mine was officially opened yesterday in Western Australia. It makes the Sinclair project, owned by Pioneer Resources, 40km north of Norseman just the third mine of its kind in the world. The other two are in Canada and Zimbabwe...

The site 40km north of Norseman, sits on Ngadju country. The Ngadju Native Title Aboriginal Corporation and Pioneer struck mining and heritage agreements just short of a year ago. The Corporation's CEO Paul Stenson said the whole process has been best practice. Mr Stenson received a symbolic cheque on site this week to mark the start of mining and he said the money will benefit the community immensely. "Its very exciting that such a rare mineral has been found, there's only three locations in the world I believe where caesium is being mined so its fantastic that we have some on our country," he said. "That will mean in the longer term some training and employment opportunities for the Ngadju people."
