An Aboriginal community has won a 20-year battle to be recognised as the native title holders of about 40,000 square kilometres of land in Western Australia's Pilbara region, including the mining town Newman.

The Nyiyaparli community lodged its first claim on September 29, 1998 and the determination was made in an on-country Federal Court hearing on Wednesday.
